“This project is a combination of my passion for coding, the desire to contribute to the world, and engineering.”

Lucas Mkheidze received the 2023 Broadcom Coding with CommitmentTM award at the Bergen Science Challenge in New Jersey for his project on growing and obtaining food with less effort and space.

Broadcom Coding with Commitment recognizes students in grades 5-8 who combine STEM learning with coding to solve a community problem they care about that aligns with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

“I was impressed with Lucas’ concern for food deserts and the challenges of growing localized and high-quality fruit and vegetables in his urban communities,” said Michael Melillo, Senior Director, Network Monitoring & Management Software Products, Broadcom Inc. “So, he engineered an autonomous green house with rotating solar panels, ventilation and an automated watering system that could run 24x7 in a small space. He needed to learn C++ to make the system work, and so he picked up a book and taught himself. We need more students like Lucas that grow up to rely on technology and have the education and experience to contribute to build more innovation to a world that is increasingly reliant on technology.”

“I felt surprised and proud that my project was recognized,” said Lucas. “In the future, I hope to create more projects like this that can be applied to the real world, and I also hope to expand my knowledge in coding.”

Congratulations, LUCAS!
