Broadcom Foundation Celebrates World Youth Skills Day

Program Highlights

Broadcom Foundation joins the United Nations in celebrating World Youth Skills Day.

Because basic coding is a critical 21st Century+ skill for girls, under-resourced, and underrepresented youth, the Foundation encourages all young people to become digitally literate so as to compete for highly skilled jobs in emerging industries built on technologies of the future. World Youth Skills Day celebrates youth as catalysts for change and reinforces Broadcom Foundation’s commitment to providing them with opportunities to tackle global challenges in their local communities. Paula Golden, President of Broadcom Foundation, notes that “Digital literacy is not only important for communicating, acquiring an education, and finding meaningful employment, it also is essential to being an active citizen in modern society.”

Broadcom Foundation Drives Skills Development

Quality apprenticeships, well-structured internships, and volunteering initiatives can offer crucial entry points into the labor market for future jobseekers who know basic coding. Broadcom Foundation engages in strategic partnerships that expand the number of young people with this skill set. Foundation-sponsored organizations such as Girl Scouts of Orange County, TGR Foundation, Collective for Youth Empowerment in STEM & Society (CYESS), and a myriad of science fairs and code clubs offer coding to middle schoolers that helps to prepare them for their future college and career opportunities. Support for Raspberry Pi Foundation’s free resources help bring coding to under-resourced communities such as the Africa Science Buskers’ Autonomous Car Program.

Broadcom Coding with Commitment® Award Winner Shivansh Grover - Coding Skills: Opening Pathways in STEM

To encourage youth skills-building, the Broadcom Coding with Commitment® award is designed to inspire kids to learn coding to improve a community problem they care about. Broadcom Coding with Commitment® award winner Shivansh Grover from the Alameda County Science and Engineering Fair applied his coding skills to develop AquaNeer, a smart water management system.

Watching former Broadcom Engineer Gordon Lindsay’s video Turning Sand into Fun, which explains how semiconductors are made from sand, peaked Shivansh’s interest in coding and robotics, led him to explore Python with Raspberry P and Arduino, and culminated in the development of small robots at home. Reflecting on his experiences, Shivansh shares, “...with coding, I am empowered with tools to bring my ideas to life and solve problems,” and he aims to use his invention to support sustainable cities and communities. He noted, “There is a need to have a smart water system that conserves freshwater resources. Computer technology can help us achieve this.”

Shivansh’s story illustrates how equipping youth with the critical skill of coding can shape future career choices and opportunities, fostering the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs who have the tools to address challenges of the future.

Shivansh’s dedication to coding extends beyond solving problems to sharing knowledge and motivating others. He expresses, “I want to advance my coding skills and learn different programming languages to develop innovative solutions for real-world problems. I also want to share my knowledge with other kids and motivate them to learn coding by showing them what coding and software can do to solve problems.” Shivansh and young people like him are why Broadcom Foundation celebrates World Youth Skills Day.
